Lost Planet is a game that has taunted me every time I visited a Target, BestBuy, or Walmart type store that has a video game section. The Lost Planet is published and developed by Capcom (one of my favorite game companies) so my curiosity regarding whether it's something I need to play has been there for months. Watching the review of Lost Planet on GameTrailers only confused me more. They say its fun then go on with the "but this, and but that". The game has been around $29-$39 in stores for months now. After hearing about the new Colonies version Capcom has just released at the $29.99 price point I decided to go ahead and buy it.
This new "Colonies" version has ALOT of added extras including some content that was on the Live Arcade Marketplace. See the end of this post for the full list of added extras. I must commend Capcom for adding in all this content and still selling this game at $29.99. I had never played the original Lost Planet game outside of the Xbox Live demo. After about an hour of playing it last night I must say that the game is great and very fun. Just remember to turn auto-aim OFF. It will hinder you at times and other times make the game too easy and less fun. I really dont subscribe to the belief that you need to finish a game to know if its good or not. I couldn't tell you the last time I played a game that was wack for the first 30 minutes and then turned out to be epic later on. Most of us have too many game options so if you cant grab me and suck me in early on then then game fails.
Lost Planet sucked me in early. The action begins as soon as you begin the game (see the video above for the first 6 minutes of gameplay). The game menus kind of suck but from the very beginning you can tell that the production quality of the game is high. The graphics are great. There is in game brightness control which I love. The controls are tight and responsive. I don't have a complaint from either front.
The game has an epic feel to it and the music/soundscape has much to do with that. The game really uses the Dolby Digital surround in a great way. You wan localize where an enemy is approaching from. As you pan or turn toward the enemy the sound localization will change accordingly. The sound effects and music are crisp and overall the sounds in the game have a cinema like feel to it.
The bottom line is that Lost Planet Colonies is worth $29.99. In fact its worth more so it's a steal. I have not yet delved into playing through the multiplayer modes and new multiplayer content and its already evident that the game is worth more than $29.99. I think this is one of the best deals on the Xbox 360 right now.
Lost Planet: Colonies is a recommended purchase.
