Capcom has just been sued over Dead Rising’s similarities to George Romero’s Dawn of the Dead movie. MKR Group the company that owns the rights to Dawn of the Dead claims similarities between the two infringe upon their intellectual property. Here is IMDB’s description of Dawn of The Dead:
A nurse, a policeman, a street gang member, his wife, a salesman, and other survivors of a worldwide plague that is producing aggressive, flesh-eating zombies, take refuge in a mega Midwestern shopping mall.
Here is Wikipedia’s description of Dead Rising:
Dead Rising’s story centers on Frank West, a photojournalist who ends up trapped in a shopping mall infested with zombies. Frank must defend himself from zombie attacks, rescue survivors and avoid crazed psychopaths, while still attempting to uncover the truth behind the incident.
Interesting stuff. A few weeks ago I tried to download the Dead Rising demo from Xbox live and it was unavailable. This past Sunday I was able top download the Dead Rising demo successfully. Upon starting the demo a disclaimer that the game is not based on George Romero’s Dawn of The Dead movie appears. I am not sure if the disclaimer was there in the past but I doubt it was included.
